Events surrounding the 1966 Arno flood, the aftermath, the tremendous damage it caused to Florence (and many surrounding cities along the river), and the danger it created is a largely unknown today.
In the immediate hours that followed the flood, foreign students already in Florence chose to ignore the danger as they rushed into the mud to help Florentines save history. Soon after, more arrived...and arrived...and arrived.
Yet, there are many important facets of the Arno flood that are-to quote a phrase from the American Library Association's Booklist review-"worth commemorating"...the least of which is the international community of youth that kept growing after these brave heroes were able to get to Florence.
